Where to eat before a match at the Bernabéu without eating standing up

Graderío de un estadio de fútbol vacío antes de un partido

Eating before a match at the Bernabéu looks easy and rarely goes well. The same mistake repeats itself: booking a hundred metres from the stadium and arriving an hour before kick-off. At that hour, in that radius, no kitchen can keep up.

The three rules

  1. Move five minutes away. Between the stadium gate and a five-minute walk there is a world of difference: same neighbourhood, completely different wait. General Perón and the Azca streets are that ring.
  2. Always book. On a match day, turning up without a booking is a lottery. Mention the kick-off time when you book so the kitchen can plan for it.
  3. Order to share, not a long menu. Sharing plates arrive in minutes; a stew and a main course do not. Rabas, something off the grill, done.

How much time to leave

As a rule, two hours before kick-off if you are sitting down to a meal, and ninety minutes if you are just picking at something. Factor in access: on big nights the Castellana is closed in sections and getting into the stadium takes longer than you think.

For midweek evening matches there is a better option: eat afterwards. It is far calmer, as long as the kitchen is still open at that hour.

The fixture list decides

  • Midweek evening. The area is already full of office workers. The sensible move is to eat after the match, not before.
  • Weekend lunchtime. The hardest case: the neighbourhood lunch collides with the stadium crowd. Book or you will not eat.
  • Weekend evening. The easiest, because the offices are gone and the neighbourhood eats later.
  • Concerts. Worse than matches: people arrive much earlier and stay in the area longer.

What to order when time is short

Anything from the grill, the plancha or the fryer comes out before a stew. Rabas, something grilled, tortilla, and stop there. A three-course menu with ninety minutes to kick-off is a gamble.

And ask for the bill when the main course arrives. It sounds blunt, but on match days it is the difference between walking into the stadium calmly and running.

Frequently asked

Better to eat before or after the match?

After is almost always more comfortable, as long as the kitchen is still open. Before only works with two hours to spare.

How we work on match days

La Reinosa is at Avenida General Perón 13, a five-minute walk from the stadium, which is exactly the ring rule one is talking about. We have a terrace and a dining room, and sharing plates that come out fast.

If you are coming to the football, book a table and tell us the kick-off time, or call +34 916 671 967.
